“As every year, we celebrate this anniversary to turn on the spotlights on female and male seafarers workers, drawing attention to the problems they live every day, further aggravated by the pandemic still ongoing”, says Monica Mascia, FIT-CISL National Secretary, on the International Day of the Seafarers – 25th June, 2020’s anniversary.
“This year – continues Mascia – the annual International Day of the Seafarers celebrates its tenth anniversary. The day aims to pay homage to seafarers by representing their key role, engaged in the front line in the Covid-19 pandemic emergency, by performing an essential role. Only thanks to their dedication, skills, resilience and perseverance, we succeeded worldwide to guarantee the flow of vital goods such as: food, medicine and medical supplies. Their work has continued without interruption, despite the fact that they had to face serious problems related to the crew changes, the repatriation and the difficulties in obtaining visas to reach the vessels. Never, like this year, we feel to thank them for their work, highlighting what a such role they played during the emergency”.
The National Secretary concludes: “This year IMO, the UN agency for the maritime sector, is dedicating this day to the #SeafarersAreKeyWorkers’ campaign (seafarers are key workers). As FIT-CISL, we adhere to this campaign to pay homage, through this global appeal, our gratitude to the category and the work carried out”.
